INSIGHTS

How is coaching different from counseling or therapy you might ask. These are sister professions that can compliment each other in helping people improve their lives but they also have fundamental differences.

Counseling
Counseling and therapy come from the medical model of pathology. The individual receiving counseling is referred to as the “patient”. A diagnosis is required and a treatment plan is developed to eliminate or improve what is ailing the patient. The focus of the work is generally on the patience’s past. The intention is to create a safe environment to heal, understand and resolve the issue(s) that are causing the “dis-ease”. Small, incremental changes occur for the patient over time toward health and well being.

Coaching
Coaching, on the other hand, is a partnership between a coach and their client that is based in desire, discovery and courage. From a coaching perspective there is nothing wrong, bad or needs to be fixed for the client to achieve what they are seeking. The client is in charge of the the overall coaching objectives; as well as, the weekly conversation agenda.

It requires a willingness for the client to be open, take action, set intentions and take risks in order to produce actual results.
